Legislators Visit May Center School for Brain Injury

04/7/15

On March 20, 2015, the Massachusetts Association of Approved Private Schools (maaps) and the May Center School for Brain Injury and Related Disorders in Brockton, Mass., hosted an “Invite Your Legislator to School Day.” The wonderful event was from 9:30am to 11:30am and was attended by eight House Representatives and one Massachusetts Senator.

These nine legislators had the opportunity to meet the students and staff of the school in a classroom setting, speak with parents and school administrators about why schools like the May Center Schools are so important, and tour the school with the students themselves!

Along with formal invitations to attend the event, legislators received personal notes from students, like the ones attached here.

Our hope is that this event will provide these decision-makers with an informative and credible reference point when the topic of Special Education comes before them in legislative and budgetary discussions.

Without schools like the May Center School for Brain Injury and Related Disorders, students with disabilities would not have the same keys to a successful future. As Declan (below), one of the student speakers, stated, “My teachers understand brain injury and they explain things in a way I understand. It’s been a lot of work but I’ve come further than I ever could have imagined. I feel that the May Center had helped me to become the person I am today.”
