Individuals with autism have many challenges in the areas of social skills and self-regulation. Self-management for individuals with autism is important both as a management tool and as a means to enhance students' quality of life by empowering them to control their own behavior (Suk-Hyang, Simpson & Shogren, 2007). Under the rubric of self-management, there are a number of interventions that have been found to be effective for changing behavior. These include self-monitoring, self-assessment, and self-recording.

Self-management programs usually involve a combination of two or more following strategies - self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and self- reinforcement for goal attainment. In a self-management program the focus of the program is to teach the individuals to: 1) discriminate the occurrence of the target response; 2) reliably self-record one or more elements of the target response in accordance with some standard or scale; 3) evaluate their behavior relative to an agreed-upon standard, and; 4) deliver contingently self-selected reinforcers. Self-management interventions have been to be an evidenced based with individuals with autism (National Standards Project, Suk-Hyang, Simpson & Shogren, 2007).

This webinar will provide participants with an overview of the research on self-management, the effectiveness of self-management interventions as well as the advantages of using self-management strategies. The webinar will review the components of a self-management program, how to design a successful self-management program and the prerequisites for the use of a self-management program. Examples of self-management programs will be provided to the participants.
