James Kirkpatrick, Jr.
2020 Exceptional Service Award Recipient

Program Coordinator
May Center for Adult Services
Eastern Mass.

James deserves special recognition for his outstanding dedication and flexibility. Specifically, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, he was asked to leave his residence and work full-time in two different COVID-positive homes. This reassignment lasted for two months.

As a member of what came to be known as the “COVID Crew,” James and three other staff stepped in to cover shifts round-the-clock at the two adult residences where many staff members and residents had tested positive for COVID. They kept the individuals safe and cared for with consistent staffing, and filling in as infected staff took care of themselves and quarantined.

With life being anything but normal, the crew provided as much normalcy as they could, always showing empathy toward the individuals and working hard to help them to continue to have the best quality of life possible.

Even though the uncertainty was at its peak when James was reassigned, he willingly accepted this change. This flexibility is in keeping with James’ style. He is always ready to step up and help out whenever he is needed. Even when James was not physically working in his residence, he stayed in touch with the staff and kept things going there. This combination of dedication and adaptability is unique and special. We’re lucky to have someone like James as a Program Coordinator.
