Staff Pound to Stay in Shape!

07/20/17

If you walk by the gymnasium after work at the May Center School for Autism and Developmental Disabilities in Randolph on Tuesdays, you’ll hear 20 or more sets of drumsticks beating in unison. It is not a music class - it’s a POUND class!

Never heard of POUND? Not many people have. POUND is a strength- and cardio-based workout that combines popular music with constant drumming.

(Jenna Keaney leading the POUND class)

My name is Jenna Keaney. I’m a Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) who enjoys helping our students find their voices. As a certified POUND instructor, I combine my love of dance and exercise to help our employees reach their personal fitness goals as well.

POUND is successful because it tricks you into working out. The music is upbeat and exciting, and everyone enjoys hitting the floor with the drumsticks. We work from a squatting position, which strengthens our core muscles. It is a full body workout.

Teaching POUND has been a great way to bring employees from all different departments together to have fun. We have one common goal: to get healthy and enjoy doing it!
