A message from a May Center School parent about the splash pad initiative in Randolph, Mass.!

A message from Sabrina Manno, mom to Marcus, a student at the May Center School for Autism and Developmental Disabilities in Randolph, Mass.

Dear May community,
 
I hope you have heard the wonderful news that the May Center School in Randolph will be building a 1,500-square-foot splash pad in the space next to the playground. My son, Marcus, is a student at the school.  I can’t tell you how excited I am for him – for all of our children - and what this will mean for them.  Playing alongside his peers in a fun, interactive, sensory-stimulating water park would create the ultimate experience for Marcus. 
 
The splash pad will provide an area for play and also be a resource for the sensory needs of the children, allowing them to explore -light touch to firm touch, dry to wet - and learn concepts of science and math, such as empty/full, before/after, shallow/deep.

And, as they play, our children will learn problem-solving and social skills that come along with unexpected situations in a fun and meaningful way.

Here’s what I’ve learned about children with ASD and other developmental disabilities using splash pads: 

• Children strengthen gross motor skills by running, jumping, and dodging water.
• Water play encourages hand and eye coordination through splashing, pouring, and feeling water.
• Splash pads help a child emotionally by providing deep pressure, soothing sounds, and opportunities of dealing with the unexpected.
