May Institute’s Adult Services Earn National Accreditation

Randolph, Mass. – May Institute’s Adult Services division, including community housing, supported living, community integration, and day and employment programs for individuals with developmental disabilities living in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Florida, has received a three-year accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

May Institute is a nonprofit organization that provides a continuum of programs and services to individuals of all ages with special needs. The Adult Services division provides residential services in more than 150 group homes and supported living apartments in communities across Massachusetts and in Connecticut and Florida. It also operates day habilitation programs that provide individualized support including medical monitoring, nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapies, daily living skills training, and active community involvement.

May Institute also operates employment training and supported employment programs. Hire Enterprises, a vocational rehabilitation program, offers vocational assistance to individuals with disabilities through partnerships with local businesses.

CARF accreditation represents the highest level of compliance and is granted to organizations that exhibit substantial fulfillment of standards established by the Commission. Accreditation of May Institute’s Adult Services is a result of a rigorous peer review process and a demonstration of the highest quality, measurability, and accountability.

The CARF accreditation report congratulated the Institute for its “expectation of excellence” in service, research, and training. “Staff members are aware of this expectation and strive to meet it,” CARF representatives noted in their accreditation report. “As a result, the quality of services and satisfaction are very high.”

The report also praised May Institute’s staff members, as being “caring, compassionate, dedicated, and knowledgeable,” and spotlighted the organization’s dedication to providing evidence-based applied behavior analysis (ABA) services. “One of May Institute’s greatest strengths is its strong ABA services, which are extremely comprehensive, well coordinated, and consistently implemented,” the report stated.

“This accreditation is not only a well deserved recognition of May Institute’s outstanding Adult Services and the staff who provide those services, but also a strong endorsement for the effectiveness of applied behavior analysis, a methodology the Institute has employed and promoted for decades,” said Walter P. Christian, Ph.D., ABBP, ABPP, May Institute’s President and CEO.

All May Institute programs that have undergone the CARF accreditation process have earned three-year accreditation. This constitutes one of the largest and most comprehensive accreditations CARF has ever awarded for a network of behavioral programs.
