Our Favorite People Art Project - Published in The Provider, September 2025

Students at the May Center School for Autism and Developmental Disabilities in Randolph, Mass., recently took part in a very special art project—creating portraits of a favorite person.

Guided by art teacher Laurie Matthews, the project began with a lesson on facial proportions. Using pencil and paper, students learned how to place horizontal and vertical lines as guides (which were later erased). Then came the big question: “Who is your favorite person?”

To help spark ideas, and as a reference source, each student received a packet with a variety of facial images of people of all ages. Some students also used their personal communication devices to access images of beloved family members, teachers, or friends.

From there, the creativity really flowed. Students personalized their basic portraits by adjusting features and adding details to bring their portraits to life. In doing so, they truly captured their chosen person’s unique look. Finally, students added color with markers, crayons, or watercolor paints.

The results? A vibrant collection of one-of-a-kind, 9”x12” portraits celebrating the people who make the students’ lives brighter. Each face tells a story of connection, affection, and joy.

We are honored that The Provider asked to publish a selection of the portraits in their September, 2025, eEdition.
