The Trouble With Technology: Breaking Free From a Behavior Trap

Professional Continuing Education Series

Instructor: John J. Kennedy, BCBA, LABA

Description: The intent of this presentation is to address the socially significant problem of internet addiction as defined by the most current peer-reviewed literature and to present behavior analytic recommendations for treatment. The overuse of digital technology among teenagers aged 13 to 18 will be the presentation's focus. Current statistics and a review of behavioral literature pertaining to addiction will be provided. Much of this analysis will focus on the principle of temporal discounting. Human susceptibility to immediate reinforcement at the cost of long-term, delayed gains will be framed globally and then narrowed to adolescent patterns of internet use behavior. To effectively decrease the amount of time that teenagers spend online, caregivers and instructors may find behavior analytic procedures helpful. Contingency management with changing criteria is a potential treatment for internet addiction and can be applied and measured with relative simplicity.
