What is School-wide PBIS?
This FREE introduction to Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports for school and district administrators, school psychologists, counselors, intervention specialists, and teachers will include an overview of research-based assessment and intervention practices that school teams apply using a three-tiered systems prevention model. We will review specific steps schools and districts should take to become “ready” to implement PBIS, which will increase sustainability and the development of local capacity.

*Learn how PBIS will help you meet the DOE bullying prevention curricula requirements!
The bullying prevention and intervention law requires the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to publish guidelines for implementing social and emotional learning curricula by June 30, 2011. What evidence-based curricula will your district be using?

The Model Bullying Prevention and Intervention Plan (August 2010) outlined by the DESE identifies the use of positive behavioral supports as one of the approaches that "are integral to establishing a safe and supportive school environment...(and) underscore the importance of our bullying intervention and prevention initiatives."

"By combining whole-school efforts with those taking place on behalf of individual students with disabilities, schools and districts can reduce the threat of bullying of and by this population, and continue to make progress toward school safety and the effective inclusion of all students in their school communities."

Will School-wide PBIS work in my school?
PBIS has been successfully implemented at all grade levels in over 10,000 schools across the country to improve academic outcomes and establish safer school environments. After attending this session, you will understand how PBIS strategies could be successfully implemented in your school or district.

Invest resources wisely.
Federal ARRA and Massachusetts DESE grants emphasize the need for schools to invest money and resources in sustainable multi-tiered systems of instruction. As a Response to Intervention (RtI) model, School-wide PBIS can be sustained effectively because districts establish internal capacity.

MA DESE has recognized PBIS as an effective approach to reduce the use of seclusion and restraint practices (Commissioner’s Update 2/25/10).
