Lessons Learned: Utilizing OBM Strategies to Improve Staff Training, Performance, and Safety

From May Institute's Distinguished Speaker Series

Instructor:  Lynn Bowman, MA, BCBA, LBA, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine & Kennedy Krieger Institute

Description: Positive treatment outcomes for the clients we serve are dependent not only on well-devised behavioral and psychiatric treatment plans, but also on the integrity in which prescribed treatments are implemented by staff. A high level of expertise and training is often needed for accurate plan implementation; however paraprofessionals often have little experience implementing such plans prior to employment. The purpose of the current presentation is to first, describe strategies utilizing behavior analytic principles to improve training and performance for behavior plan implementation. Next, system-wide approaches utilizing best practice recommendations and data to drive targeted performance improvement projects implemented on the Neurobehavioral Unit at the Kennedy Krieger Institute will be discussed. Projects include large scale studies aimed to understand and reduce staff injuries and to improve hand hygiene compliance, as well as quality improvement projects such as enhancing staff communication and increasing the delivery of positive feedback by supervisory staff. Finally, a strategy to help with those pesky problems that just won’t go away will be presented.
