Description: We will present on the conceptualization, development, and refinement of a decision tool. The tool is designed to help behavior analysts and classroom teachers incorporate hypothesis testing strategies in functional behavior assessments for students with persistent challenging behavior. Using a response-guided framework, the decision tool supports practitioner selection of (a) hypothesis testing strategy, (b) practical adaptations to maximize efficiency, (c) assessment location, (d) assessment implementer, and (e) method of data collection. We will share a preliminary data set on practitioner teams and students with whom we have piloted the decision tool. We will describe conditions in which we consider the tool to be most useful; challenges we have encountered in application; and future plans to rigorously evaluate whether using the decision tool leads to interpretable and valid assessment outcomes that inform effective individualized interventions.
