Instructor: Corina Jimenez-Gomez, Ph.D., BCBA-D
Description: Siblings of children with ASD are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with ASD or other developmental disorders. Monitoring their development from infancy may allow caregivers and practitioners to provide interventions for early delays, which may mitigate early signs of ASD. Further, caregiver involvement may allow young children to start receiving behavioral interventions at an earlier age.
The use of caregiver-implemented screening tools and interventions were used to identify early delays and specific areas of concern. The areas of concern identified via monthly checklists were used to guide the development of an intervention plan, implemented by caregivers after receiving general case training. After receiving behavioral skills training to implement one protocol correctly, parents demonstrated generalization of skills on novel targets and protocols. Other examples of caregiver-implemented interventions to facilitate generalization and maintenance of skills also will be discussed.
