Teaching Tolerance to Delayed Reinforcement for Individuals with Severe Problem Behavior

Event Description: Tolerating delays to reinforcement can be very challenging for children, but is especially challenging for individuals with severe problem behavior in that delays can lead to a substantial increase in dangerous behavior.

Teaching tolerance to delays is an important component in treating individuals with severe problem behavior as these delays are unavoidable in the natural environment. When introducing delays to reinforcement, treatment gains may often be lost, so it is necessary to introduce delays in a manner that promotes continued treatment efficacy. There are a few ways in which we can help mediate delays by arranging contingencies for tolerance and teaching alternative intervening behaviors. Delay fading with the use of time-based, DRO-based, or DRA-based delays is one way that we can arrange contingencies to support tolerance.

Additionally, providing alternative activities during delays can help mediate lengthy periods without reinforcement. Furthermore, delays to reinforcement can be introduced by arranging work periods to promote delay tolerance and preference for delayed reinforcers by altering the work to reinforcement ratio.
