Promoting Happiness among Adults with Severe Disabilities: Evidence-based Strategies

Description: Dr. Dennis Reid will describe strategies for promoting day-to-day happiness among adults who have severe disabilities. The presentation will stress the importance of daily happiness on overall quality of life and will discuss the notion of happiness as a private event that is amenable only to indirect assessment. Means of identifying and validating indices of happiness and unhappiness will be presented for use with individuals who have serious difficulty describing such events.

The presenter also will review observation methods for use in monitoring indices of happiness and unhappiness and evidence-based strategies for increasing happiness and decreasing unhappiness during daily routines. Periodic reference will be made to research providing the evidence base for the strategies discussed and when relevant, demonstrations will be conducted of selected strategies along with opportunities for attendee practice.
 
This workshop will be valuable to clinicians, managers, and supervisors working in community and human service settings with individuals across the lifespan. Program content is expected to be at the intermediate practice level.

May Institute is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologist. May Institute is approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to grant Continuing Education Credits. May Institute maintains responsibility for this program and its content. 
 
This workshop will offer three (3) Continuing Education Credits for psychologists, nurses, LICSWs, LMHCs and BCBAs.
