Description: Communication and social impairments are core deficits among individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities. However, there is limited research evaluating effective procedures for teaching social skills to adolescents and young adults within this population. First, an overview of assessment of social skills as well as research recommendations for interventions designed to increase social skills will be discussed.
This presentation will then share results from two projects conducted in a specialized education setting. The first study used a multiple baseline design across three participants to teach discriminated mands for social information which is a critical skill for maintaining reciprocal conversations. In the second project, a class-wide procedure was implemented to increase social skills using direct instruction, practice opportunities, and a reinforcement system. Implications for practice and future directions will be discussed.
