May Institute lost a dear colleague and friend — Todd Fournier — to cancer in 2010. Todd, who had been an employee of May Institute for eight years, was selected to receive a 2010 Trustee’s Fund Award. Although Todd was not able to attend the award ceremony in December, which took place only a few days before his death, he knew and was very pleased that he had been selected.
Todd faced adversity with the kind of dignity, perseverance, and grace that serves as an inspiration for everyone who knew him. He will be sorely missed by his friends and co-workers at May Institute, and the many children and families he has helped over the years.
What follows is the nomination submission for Todd which led to his selection as a 2010 Awardee:
Todd has been with May Institute for the past eight years. He started his career as an assistant teacher in Braintree and has since been promoted to a Job Coach in Randolph. He has always been a considerate, thoughtful, and caring staff member and has devoted much time to furthering our students’ skills and independence. Through his gentle guidance, he not only teaches students functional and practical skills, but shows them caring and kindness. His students often ask for him. Whenever Todd walks into the classroom to pick up a student for their job, you can tell he just made their day that much better.
Todd always reaches out to others and will make an effort to get to know and welcome anyone who hasn’t already had the pleasure of meeting him. He is always willing to share whatever he has so he can meet others’ needs. Affectionately dubbed the “Mayor of the May,” Todd always has a big smile for everyone, fellow staff members and students alike. In addition to his work at May, Todd has spent time volunteering to help children with special needs in the community. For several years, he led a social skills group for children with Asperger’s Syndrome at the local YMCA. This group met every other Friday night and the children participated in a range of activities, many of which involved sports.
Todd’s spirit and enthusiasm are truly remarkable. He is a selfless person who has devoted his life to helping others and asks for nothing in return. Todd exemplifies the dedication and perseverance that we hope to see from all of our employees here at May Institute. He has touched the lives of students and staff alike.
