2021 Exceptional Service Award Recipient

Registered Behavior Technician
May Center for Adult Services
Cape Cod and Southeastern Massachusetts

Mike is an exemplary employee who continuously goes above and beyond, not just for the men and women in his care, but also for his fellow staff members. I had the pleasure of meeting and working with Mike when he was a direct care staff member and I remember being immediately blown away with his compassion for the clients, his clinical skills and attention to detail, and his ambition to gain new skills and learn more about how to better serve the adult population.

In the summer of 2020, our area lost its two Assistant Clinical Directors, leaving the Clinical Director as the sole clinician Off-Cape. I came on board shortly after to help out and saw the huge need for additional clinical support. When I met Mike, I knew he had potential (if not the formal training) and I knew he’d step up to the plate if given the opportunity. He amazed everyone, and quickly became the first Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) employed in CCSE. The Off-Cape group continued to go without any Assistant Clinical Directors for months and Mike has performed remarkably above and beyond his duties as an RBT to help out our clinical team.

Without Mike, I would not have been able to provide the level of behavior analytic services I currently provide to the men on my caseload in CCSE. He has helped me keep track of data, run functional analyses and formal treatment sessions, and ensure effective treatments are implemented accurately.

I also have not met many people who prioritize our client’s dignity and respect as much as Mike. He constantly puts himself in our clients’ shoes to make sure they are being treated respectfully. Just by having a conversation with Mike, you can tell how much he cares. You can also see how much he cares by watching his interactions with clients – the smiles and excitement when they see him says it all!

A great example of Mike’s exemplary work happened during a recent storm. One of our houses was without power, which caused agitation and high rates of aggression. Despite the storm, downed trees, and his own personal issues caused by the storm, he drove to the house to help out the residents as well as the staff. Mike informed me that he had to leave on time because he had his own school responsibility that evening. Unfortunately, there were several callouts for the evening shift, requiring one person to stay. Mike let the other staff leave, even though it was technically their responsibility to stay. He continued to stay and provide excellent care until relief staff could arrive. This is a perfect example of the great person Mike is – putting the clients and his fellow staff members needs before his own. I can’t think of someone more deserving of an award for their exceptional service.
