Joyce Hinds, 2009 Trustees’ Fund Awardee

Program Specialist
Springfield Adult Service
Springfield, Mass.

Joyce Hinds has worked as a direct care provider with May Institute since October 2006. She is one of those rare people who cares for and loves others without the expectation of reciprocation. For Joyce, giving is a way of life. For example, when one young man she works with was in need of a new backpack, she gave him one. When another man was about to work on a money objective, she brought him in a new wallet. She refuses all offers of reimbursement. Joyce works and gives because she wants to make a difference in other people’s lives.

She knows how special holidays are. When three of the four residents of a group home go home for holidays, she will always invite the remaining individual to her house to spend the holiday with her and her family. If this person requires a wheelchair, she will rent ramps to make her home wheelchair accessible. Anytime she has a get-together or family barbecue, she always invites the individuals in her care. She is also willing to take them to doctors’ appointments, stay home with them when they are sick, and work extra shifts when there are call-outs.

Joyce respects the men she works with and is always alert, aware, and accurate when it comes to understanding their needs despite their communications challenges. She knows each individual’s support strategies and implements them with great care. She also takes it upon herself to teach coworkers how to correctly implement behavior plans or support strategies if they need assistance.

There is no one who deserves a Trustees’ Award more then Joyce Hinds. She is creative, energetic, and a true advocate of human rights. Joyce represents what all May employees should aspire to be.
