Gilian Washington, 2013 Trustees’ Fund Awardee

Program Specialist
May Center for Adult Services
West Springfield, Mass.

Gilian is a warm and caring woman who does an amazing job at a residence in West Springfield, supporting four women by working overnights as well as day and evening shifts, as needed.

She possesses a tireless nature and a cheery demeanor no matter what stressors she may be facing. In addition to her job, Gilian is a devoted mother to her biological and foster children, an author, and a business owner. Still, she finds time to accompany the women in her care to doctor’s appointments, hospital stays, and vacations.

Gilian has been with May Institute since June 2002. When she joined us, she did not have any formal experience in human services, but was eager to learn. Before the residence where she works was opened, she played a major role in preparing the first women to live there – and their parents – for a successful launch of a new program.

Since that time, Gilian has performed every task required of a Program Specialist. At times when there was no Program Coordinator at the home, she willingly performed many responsibilities above and beyond her job description.

Her smiling face and cheerfulness in the morning, after she has stayed awake all night, is the kind of greeting any of us would wish for someone we love. Gilian volunteers to assist the women when they face challenges or deal with stressful situations. She supports them when they dance at weddings and when they cry at funerals. In the 11 years she has worked at the residence, Gilian has assisted with departures and additions, coped with multiple staff changes, and even helped evacuate residents after a tornado.

Her insight is invaluable, she is always eager to help, and she is looking forward to being part of the team to bring Positive Behavior Supports to Adult Services.

We are very fortunate that Gilian has made her home at May Institute, and that she continues to be the kind of employee we should all strive to be.
