Residential Living

Community-based Living
May Institute community residences provide supportive environments for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. Provided in accordance with each student’s Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), our services focus on helping students develop greater independence in all activities of daily living, including self-care, socialization, communication, self-control, and domestic skills. Our highly trained staff provide 24-hour support and supervision to ensure that each child’s unique needs are met.

Community-based living services for children are available in the following locations:

Community Transition Program
The May Center for Child Development in Chatham, Massachusetts, has developed the Community Transition Program to help children and adolescents live in the least restrictive environment appropriate to their needs. The program offers an alternative for those who no longer need residential care, but who cannot yet return to their natural homes due to other difficulties.

When a student is placed in this program, he/she moves into the home of an identified transition specialist, a trained staff member of the May Center. The child attends a neighborhood school and participates in community activities as appropriate. The transition specialist is responsible, along with other involved parties, for the development and implementation of the child’s Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). In the home, the specialist measures behaviors, implements strategies of proven effectiveness, and documents all behavior changes. Open communication with the child’s school program is maintained, with consultation services available as needed. Visits to the child’s natural home and ongoing parent support and education are essential features of this program.

Employment Training and Support Services
Vocational education can play a critical role in improving quality of life for a student with developmental disabilities. May Institute’s employment training and support service programs provide a comprehensive continuum of services, ranging from center-based work-skills training to community-based job coaching and support. Students receive individualized assistance based on their unique abilities, with the ultimate goal of gaining the skills to become competitively employed.

Employment training and support services are available in the following locations:
