Walter P. Christian, Ph.D., ABPP, ABBP
President and Chief Executive Officer

Walter P. Christian, Ph.D., ABPP, ABBP, is President and Chief Executive Officer of May Institute. Since he began his leadership of the May Institute in 1978, the Institute has grown from one school for autistic children to a comprehensive network of over 200 service locations in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, and on the West Coast. During that time, the Institute has earned an international reputation for providing outstanding behavioral healthcare, education, and rehabilitation to individuals with special needs.

Dr. Christian is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Behavior Analysis (ABA) International, the Association of Mental Health Administrators, and the American Academy of Behavior Psychology. He holds faculty appointments at Boston University School of Medicine, the University of Kansas, and Northeastern University. He has also held appointments at Harvard Medical School, McLean Hospital, and at the Developmental Evaluation Center at Children's Hospital in Boston. He has served as an expert consultant to the Special Litigation Section, Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Dr. Christian earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Auburn University and was a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral Fellow at the National Asthma Center in Denver, Colorado. He is a licensed psychologist (Massachusetts, Georgia, and Florida) and is board certified in behavior therapy (ABBP) and behavioral psychology (ABPP).

The author of eight books and over 60 articles and chapters on human service management, organizational development, client rights and service programming, Dr. Christian has served on many editorial boards. His books include: Preservation of Client Rights (1981), Effective Management in Human Services (1983), Programming Effective Human Services (1984), and Behavior Analysis and Therapy in Residential Programs (1986).
